CDS at a Glance
Assistive Technology
CDS offers demonstrations, trainings, consultations and hands-on experience in assistive technology – anything that can help people do something better, faster or more easily than they could do without it. For Delawareans with disabilities, their families and support professionals, AT’s accessibility makes life simpler and more satisfying.
K-12 Education
CDS provides educators the tools and skills they need to help students with disabilities access the general education curriculum and develop socially, in school and after-school activities. Whether working with schools on social skills programming or a positive school climate, CDS strives to make all students valued members of the school community.
University Education
CDS administers Disability Studies, UD’s largest minor; it coordinates a Career and Life Services Certificate (CLSC) program for individuals with intellectual disabilities; and it created a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program that trains graduate students and postdoctoral residents in person-centered care.
Adult Transitions
CDS generates opportunities on campus and off campus for teens and young adults to develop skills, connections and experiences that can help them learn, work and live more independently and confidently in the settings of their choosing. In person and online, lasting minutes or spanning semesters, the opportunities enlighten, empower, enliven.
Autism Initiatives
CDS supports individuals with autism and their families through Building Bridges, which boosts access to early childhood services, the Delaware Network for Excellence in Autism (DNEA), which helps train professionals and families, and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND), which grooms pre-professionals.
Health & Wellness
CDS helps individuals with disabilities reach their potential by improving their access to quality care, empowering them to navigate their own care, training individuals supporting people with autism, surveying community members about their satisfaction with services, and helping them and their families prepare for and survive emergencies.
Advocacy
CDS promotes inclusive and accessible programs and policies that can enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families. Whether those advances spring from Center initiatives or best practices in the community, CDS strives to educate individuals in the public and private sectors about them.
