The Disability Studies minor curriculum provides an interdisciplinary framework for students to learn about disability. The core courses challenge students to consider disability from different perspectives and the social contexts and resources that support inclusion in all aspects of community life. The electives allow students to select courses that engage with different topics and disciplines that match their particular interests.
The minor in Disability Studies requires 15 credit hours, distributed as follows:
- Two core courses (6 credits)
- Disability in the Disciplines elective courses (9 credits)
- Includes courses that address disability from a specific disciplinary perspective and other DIST courses.
- At least one of these electives must be from outside the requirements of the student’s major.
- Independent studies, special topics, and other courses may be used as electives with approval of the Minor’s Faculty Coordinator. To gain approval for courses not on the electives list, students must submit either
- (a) a brief justification explaining how the course topic relates to understanding disability within a broader context, or
- (b) an independently completed product from the course that connects course objectives to a disability issue.
