CDS’s assistive technology initiative offers support at conference about students with developmental disabilities
At last weekend’s annual Outside the Box conference in Rehoboth, three CDS assistive technology (AT) specialists introduced audiences to the range of AT that’s available to borrow at no charge from CDS lending libraries in each Delaware county.
In two three-hour sessions, Karen Latimer, Dan Fendler and Dick Lytton reviewed the types of AT offered by CDS’s Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative (DATI), from magnifying lenses to talking computers to augmentative and alternative communication methods for children who are nonverbal. DATI, which has more than 1,900 devices, lends these to Delawareans with disabilities who would like to try them out before making purchases.
Invited to present at Outside the Box for the first time, DATI was part of a movement to widen the focus of the conference, which is held by the Delaware School for the Deaf. Where in previous years sessions were concerned with children who are deaf or deaf-blind, this year’s slate of speakers addressed topics relevant to children with other disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome.
