Understanding Accessibility

Accessibility is the process in which the needs of people with disabilities are specifically considered. Promoting accessibility ensures that people with disabilities are provided with equitable access to the same rights, good and services as people without an identified disability. It is both mandated by law and necessary to promote inclusivity.

What is the ADA?

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a civil rights law that prevents discrimination against people with disabilities. It provides a legal framework to ensure all areas of public life, including health care environments, are accessible to people with disabilities.

What is Section 508?

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act provides federal guidance about how to make digital and print materials accessible to people with disabilities.

Accessibility goes beyond the law

The barriers people with disabilities encounter when accessing health care go beyond those outlined in federal legislation.
