Contact tracing plan for Delaware announced

Delaware has contracted with NORC, a research institution affiliated with the University of Chicago, to implement a contact-tracing plan. Individuals who have encountered a person who tested positive for COVID-19 will be expected to self-isolate. Healthy Communities Delaware, a public health coalition, will ensure Delawareans with disabilities and others who need extra support to safely self-isolate receive the accommodations they require.

Sussex OKs new Ennis School

The Sussex County Council approved an application filed by Indian River School District to build a new Howard T. Ennis School, almost twice as large as the current, 49-year-old Ennis School. The school serves students with significant disabilities. The Council urged district officials to work closely with DelDOT to avoid traffic issues.

Feds warn states that online voting experiments are ‘high-risk’

Four federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, issued a report to states saying electronic ballot return technologies are vulnerable to hacking. Delaware is one of three states piloting a cloud-based voting system for people with disabilities and others who have requested absentee ballots in the July primary.

Judge says outdated tax assessments violate Delaware law

In a lawsuit brought by the Delaware NAACP and several other parties alleging the state does not spend enough on the education of students with disabilities, students from racial minorities and English language learners, the Delaware Chancery Court ruled that the counties’ tax assessment schemes – which account for about a third of funding for public schools – violate state law. The presiding judge said that remedying the issue will take further proceedings.

Emotional aspects of spinal cord injuries: UD researchers developing tool to help people manage anxiety, depression

Researchers from UD’s Center for Health Assessment Research and Translation have been working to develop an e-health tool that includes computer-administered assessments and resources to help identify symptoms and provide self-management strategies from people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) experiencing anxiety and depression. The team was recently selected by the Department of Defense to run a three-year pilot of the tool, called iManage-SCI, at two health centers in New Jersey.
