A report issued this week by the Association of American Medical Colleges focused on medical students’ experiences disclosing their disabilities. It was found that very few disclose due to fear of judgement and perceptions of inability. The report is meant to educate those in the field about the potential of individuals with disabilities and their institution’s policies regarding disability.
The News Journal featured a WGBH Radio discussion in which members of the U.S. wheelchair curling team for the Paralympics Games share how the sport has impacted their lives by pulling them out of their shell, making them more outgoing and developing a calmer mindset.
Best Buddies of Sussex County (BBSC) hosted happy hour with live music and giveaways on March 7. People who attended had the chance to sign a banner, pledging to end their use of the R word. BBSC recently matched 100 adults with and without intellectual/developmental disabilities to foster one-to-one friendships.
Several of the semifinalists’ designs for UD’s start-up funding competition, Hen Hatch, may impact individuals with disabilities such as Homeo, a smartphone app which allows for clear communication with loved ones and Robossis, an orthopedic surgical robot which assists with pre-op planning and procedures. Semi-finalists will pitch their ideas again and winners will be chosen to receive assistance with further development and funding.
Delaware has a new text-to-911-system designed to help residents who are unable to make a phone call, who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability.
