The 27th annual Polar Bear Plunge, in Rehoboth Beach, included more than 3,000 participants and raised more than $875,000. The plunge benefits Special Olympics Delaware, which offers competitive experiences for more than 4,000 Delawareans with intellectual disabilities.
Del. State Rep. Paul Baumbach spoke with Delaware 105.9 FM, claiming that blogs are misinterpreting his end-of-life bill. Baumbach says the amendment to the bill would not force suicide on people with intellectual disabilities but instead provide additional protection, such as time to make decisions.
Kara Odom Walker, secretary of the Department of Health and Social Services, announced that Marie Nonnenmacher will be named director of Developmental Disabilities Services. She formerly served as deputy director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities Services.
The Brain Injury Association of Delaware will offer grants to schools, athletic clubs and non-profits through a BrainStrong program to support the prevention of youth concussions. The grant funds have to be used for education or creating safer practices in youth athletics.
During feedback sessions, DART bus riders and advocates expressed their frustration over new bus routes that no longer stop in Rodney Square, in Wilmington, forcing the elderly and individuals with disabilities to walk several blocks to their next bus connections.
